The Portland fried dough purveyors have long said that "The Magic is in the Hole,” but it’s never been more true than when the famous sugar slingers sweetened their offerings with a savory auxiliary record business in 2013. Yes, Voodoo Doughnut Recordings was conceived to “enhance global doughnut awareness” via limited-edition 45s that had one side “at least peripherally related to doughnuts,” but beyond that, the genres span jazz and deep-fried boogie to comedy and yodeling, and are frequently and liberally battered with plenty of punk alongside surf and garage rock on a mélange of black and colored vinyl. Now, 2015 will be the year that the label expands upon the toppings it presses into those dulcet, lacquered grooves—including live archival recordings and new ones that have nothing to do with doughnuts at all—on both big-hole seven-inchers and 12-inch LPs. Find these distinctive treats at each Voodoo location, online and in fine record stores around town.
