In the ’70s, the clubs of North and NE Portland were full of jazz, funk and soul, made primarily by musicians of color. But sadly, much of the music went undocumented and many of the musicians were displaced. For one night only, The Unsung Heroes of Portland Soul—including Shirley Nanette, Gregg Smith, The Beyons and many more, plus the release of The Gangsters’ long-lost 1972 album (recorded by Thara Memory)—will come together backed by a band directed by the always funky Tony Ozier.
