The Portland Cello Project have successfully tackled (and conquered) Radiohead, Kanye and Elliott Smith, which gives them the right to devote a couple of gigs to The Purple One. “The show is mostly Prince in various iterations, but we’ll be mixing up the set drastically at times—going way outside the bounds for contrast,” artistic director Douglas Jenkins tells. From Bach to Beck to “Baby I’m a Star,” there’ll be 10 cellos plus trumpet provided by Farnell Newton. But to seriously up the ante, PCP will be joined by a pair of Portlanders who have actually worked with Prince—sharing stages and studios—in soulful vocalist Saeeda Wright and consummate drummer Tyrone Hendrix. While plenty have paid homage to Prince before, PCP will bring a fresh perspective anchored by innovative, exploratory arrangements as well as an originality and authenticity that’s unsurpassed.
