Future Islands have been darlings of the indie world since the release of their second record, In Evening Air, in 2010. But on March 3, 2014, the rest of the world was let in on the secret when Samuel T. Herring shaked, grooved and shouted the first single, “Seasons (Waiting On You),” from their new album on Letterman.
If you haven’t yet watched the video, you should. (Just click play above!) Herring delivers the type of performance that validates the very reason why you should attend live shows: He guides the whole song with a primal dance that has become an internet sensation, but more importantly, he delivers the chorus as only a rock star can—clenched fist raised high in the air. The performance has gone viral for very good reason.
When you get finished with the video, odds are you’ll race to their website to see if they’re performing at a venue near you. Sorry, we’re going to have to break your heart before you can even think about clicking away: Future Islands’ show on Saturday, April 5 at the Doug Fir is already sold out. But we’re not completely heartless because we're still here to offer you hope!
In the short term, you have two options: As the Doug Fir is known to do, a very small, limited number of tickets may be available at the door starting at 7:30pm. (That means you’ll have to show up early, wait in line and brave the rain and cold, if that’s what April has in store for you.) Or, jet down to Eugene on Sunday, April 6 to catch them at Cozmic (and for a price of only 10 bucks!).
In the long run, you can feel comfortable knowing that their new album Singles just dropped on March 25, and the album is packed full of more songs like “Seasons (Waiting On You)” that are just waiting to be taken to another level by Herring and Co.
With a newfound popularity including a spot on the bill of this year's Coachella as well as Barcelona's Primavera Sound, you can rest assured that Future Islands will be back in Portland soon. While the venue may not be as intimate next time, the performance will surely still stun.
